Fast of 17th Tammuz

14/07/2014 03:55:47 PM

Jul14

As Jews we believe and know that the body is connected and influenced by the soul; that the physical world is affected by the spiritual. This Tuesday, the Fast of the Seventeenth of Tammuz, is the first day of the Three Weeks of mourning that commemorate the destruction of our First and Second Temples. In the haftorah that is read prior to Tisha B’Av Isaiah exhorts us: “Zion will be redeemed through Mishpat (Torah) and...Read more...

The Jewish Response to Tragedy

07/07/2014 01:15:36 PM

Jul7

At this very sorrowful time, as we make the painful transition from prayerful expectation of their release to the tragic reality of the brutal murder of our children, let us listen to the words that the extraordinarily brave and dignified mother of Naftali Franklin, Rachel, addressed to the Jewish Community of Geneva last week:

“People say, ‘I have prayed with so much devotion, Hashem must listen to...Read more...

This coming Monday night and Tuesday is the Third of Tammuz - the 20th Yahrzeit of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Make it Count

12/05/2014 11:03:50 AM

May12

During the current 50 day period between the Festival of Pesach and the Festival of Shavuot, we count each day - Sefirat HaOmer.

What is the reason for this counting?

When the Jewish People left Egypt they were told by G-d that their physical redemption (the Exodus from Egypt) was soon to be  complemented with an unprecedented spiritual Revelation in which G-d A-lmighty Himself would...Read more...

The ANZAC Israel Connection

24/04/2014 04:47:18 PM

Apr24

I have in the past, spoken of the deep connection that exists between our "lucky country" of residence, Australia, and our country of origin and ultimate destiny, Israel.

The two salient points are as follows:

A) It was the Zion Mule Corps, precursor to the Hagana and later Tzahal, that landed with the Anzacs at Gallipoli on April 25th 1915, the event that was to forge Australia's identity as a proud and...Read more...

The wine flowed, the food was in abundance.

Wherever you turned - royal tapestries and the finest of cloths.

Couches of gold and silver, tables of marble.

The list of invitees - a veritable Who's Who of the kingdom.

Truly, a banquet as no other - and for 180 days, no less!

As they say in show business: it was really some gig. That old...Read more...

A Time for Joy

07/02/2014 12:09:59 PM

Feb7

"When Adar enters, we increase in joy; when Av enters, we decrease in joy."

I heard from my predecessor at South Head, Rabbi Tobias Silberman, a beautiful insight on this passage in the Talmud. There are occasions when a Jew must increase in joy, and other occasions when a Jew must decrease in joy. There is however NO occasion in which a Jew may not be joyful.

In a similar...Read more...

Two Pillars: Unconditional Love & Freedom from Fear

Yud Tes Kislev - 19th Kislev - is a foundation day in the history of the Chassidic movement which revolutionised the Jewish world in the eighteenth century. But how does it relate to you and me on a daily basis?

The founder of the Chassidic movement was Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov. Although the Baal Shem Tov was tragically orphaned at the age of five, his father Rabbi Eliezer left him two...Read more...

The Battle Within

18/11/2013 09:44:30 AM

Nov18

In Jewish thought Jacob and Esau are compared to the Yetzer Tov and the Yetzer Hara (the good inclination and the evil inclination) that reside simultaneously within the bosom of each of us.

Just as it was with Jacob and Esau who fought each other in Rebecca's womb, so too life is a constant battle between the urge to do good and the urge to do evil.

This battle is not an easy one. The...Read more...

Live In or Live Out?

Fascinating really.

Israel is deeply embedded in the consciousness of our people. Those who are more observant pray for her three times a day and whenever they eat. Even those who are not as pious care deeply about her and think about...Read more...

For many the issue of Torah and Science is one of confrontation. You either subscribe to the traditionalism (or as some would say, superstitions) of the past, or you are open to the vast vistas of a scientific future. There is no way of truly synthesising the two.

Unfortunately, even among religious Jews there is often a dissonance between their professional lives as scientists and their religious lives as...Read more...

Preparing for the Days of Awe

15/08/2013 09:36:25 AM

Aug15

Every year, men and women are drawn to Shule on Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, souls wishing to be inspired on these holiest days of the Jewish calendar.

Often, however, they come away disappointed, voicing a litany of complaints about the quality of the service....Read more...

Elul: Balance the Books

09/08/2013 02:53:44 PM

Aug9

We are currently in the month of Elul, the month of preparation for the Days of Judgement, Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur.

Elul as a time of introspection.

It is a time to review our failings and negative character traits and decide upon ways to improve them.

However, although this is necessary, it is by no means the whole purpose of Elul. Indeed, as we shall demonstrate, it may not even be the main part.

You see,...Read more...

Not IF, but WHEN!

"See, I give before you this day blessing and curse. The blessing WHEN you will listen to G-d...and the curse, IF you will not listen..."

So begins this week's parasha.

What comforting words!

Doing right and the resultant blessings are not a matter of if, but when! No matter what our situation now, spiritually or materially, we are assured that ultimately it will all be...Read more...

Watch Your Manners!

29/07/2013 10:06:40 AM

Jul29

But Whose Manners?

A while ago, I read an interesting piece in the Sydney Morning Herald on the role of schools in teaching manners and values to children. There were those who strongly felt that the school is there to teach academics whereas values and behaviour are the province of parents alone, whereas others had an equally strong view that value-education is also part of the school's brief.

I then had the opportunity...Read more...

Are you "on" 24/7?

05/07/2013 02:29:22 PM

Jul5

It's remarkable what you can do with technology today. I'm sitting 35,000 feet over the Pacific reading emails and uploading and downloading files (including this article!) in preparation for our arrival back in Australia early Friday morning.

But is being on 24/7 (or for us Jews 24/6... thank G-d for Shabbos!) really a good thing?

Are we perhaps so busy learning and interacting technologically that we miss out on other...Read more...

NYC: A City Transformed

I'm on the No. 3 train traveling from Crown Heights to Manhattan with the Rebbetzen. "What's so remarkable about that?" you may ask.  And without historical context, you'd have a point.

I used to ride this train as a young Yeshiva bochur in the seventies. At that time it was akin to taking your life in your hands, especially if you travelled after dark. Of course we did it anyway - we were young and there was no other efficient...Read more...

Shalom Chaver - A Tribute to a Pillar of Our Community

The great Jewish poet, Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi wrote:

My heart is in the East, while I am in the far west.

Nick, we may be in far off New York,  but our broken hearts are with you in Sydney. Oh, how we long to be with you at this time! If there was ever a levaya - a Final Farewell - that we would have wished to attend, it was yours.

All our thoughts are with you our dear and precious friend, Nick - Moshe...Read more...

The Rebbe's Yahrzeit

06/06/2013 03:45:11 PM

Jun6

Next Monday night and Tuesday marks 19 years since the passing of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

I use the word "passing" because I cannot find another. However in the case of a Tzaddik who has no sense of ego or self, and whose entire life is one of devotion and love for G-d and his fellow human beings, the absence of a physical body does not entail a true passing on from this world. On the contrary,...Read more...

When Tourists Become Spies

31/05/2013 11:14:32 AM

May31

The episode of the spies, which we read in this week’s Torah portion, is one of the most enigmatic in the Torah.

On the one hand we are assured that the spies were men of stature, fit for the task that lay ahead. After all, it was Moshe who sent them on their mission.

On the other, they dashed the hopes and dreams of their entire generation.

What went wrong?

In one of his...Read more...

Shavuot 5773 Learning and Discussion

Our Shavout Learning and Discussion evening was a huge success and boasted a record attendance of 300 people. Judging by the responses and feedback, it seems that everyone left far more knowledgeable, and better equipped, than when they came.

In view of the seriousness of the matter we brought together a panel of experts to create awareness and to suggest strategies for both the prevention...Read more...

Israel: The Big Turnaround

As published in the Rabbi's Report of the South Head Synagogue Annual Report for the Year Ended 2012

Israel’s Sixty-Fifth Year

Self Esteem - An Antidote to Sin

19/04/2013 12:26:50 PM

Apr19

Since the beginning of the year, I have been giving a short, sharp shiur of about fifteen minutes duration after the Kiddush on Shabbat mornings. Attendance has been excellent - far better than I anticipated, with between twenty and thirty people participating each week. The  shiur comprises brief textual study associated with the week's parasha or festival.

This week's topic will be Self-Esteem - An Antidote to Sin. If you...Read more...

Israel - the Jewish Response to the Holocaust

16/04/2013 02:19:05 PM

Apr16

We live in the shadow and shine of the two most cataclysmic Jewish events of the past two millennia - the nadir of the Holocaust and the apex of the establishment of the State of Israel. Furthermore, these two events occurred back to back, or as we read in the Hagaddah - "from darkness to great light"!

What does this say about our people - Am Yisrael?

Next week, as we celebrate Israel's 65th...Read more...

A Different Kind of Exodus

22/03/2013 02:38:23 PM

Mar22

Every Shabbat and Yom Tov when we make Kiddush we recall the Exodus from Egypt with the words - zecher l'yetziat mitzraim.

Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, arguably the greatest posek  of our generation, poses a question: Mentioning the Exodus on Yom Tov makes sense. Every Yom Tov is in one way or another connected to the Exodus: Pesach, obviously so. Shavuot - when we received the Torah on Mt Sinai - took place 50 days after the Jews left...Read more...

Enlightenment - Not an Individual Concern

04/03/2013 02:42:45 PM

Of all the mitzvot of the Torah, our Rabbis tell us that the mitzvah of Parah Adumah is the most enigmatic. So much so, that King Solomon, the wisest of all men, said: "I thought that I was wise, but (upon seeing my inability to comprehend the mitzvah of Parah...Read more...

The Essence of Purim

18/02/2013 10:46:16 AM

Feb18

There is a Torah obligation to contribute one half shekel a year (Machatzis HaShekel) to the upkeep of the Temple Service.

Although the Temple no longer stands, the custom to give still does. It is fulfilled before Purim, because the Midrash explains that Haman's failure to destroy the Jews was due to their commitment to Machatzis HaShekel.

The custom of Machatzis HaShekel comes...Read more...
