Jewish Life
Here and There, Then and Now

In nearly two hundred, cities, towns and villages throughout Eastern Europe there is an active Jewish presence today, manned for the most part by young Chabad couples and their children. In twenty years, often a lot less, they have done wonders. There are schools, camps, shules, mikva'ot.

There is however little comparison to what once was - where all you would have to do was step into the street and you would know that it was Shabbos, you would feel the Jewishness.  If so, what are these young, courageous Shluchim doing in these places, far removed from families and friends? Attempting to ensure that the few Jews left by Hitler, and the little Judaism left after Stalin, is not eliminated entirely by the ninety per cent assimilation rate.

There is however one thing that unites the Judaism of today with that of a century ago. In every city and shtetl there were Chevrot (societies) that ensured that the poor would have food to eat, clothes to wear, education for their children. And today too, Chabad ensures that there are soup kitchens open daily, no one is without a lavish meal for Shabbat or Yom Tov, no child is a victim of neglect or deprived of a Jewish education.  This caring was THE most beautiful aspect of our entire trip.

It pains me to tell you that in Sydney today there are families who are REALLY struggling. We are unfortunately not in a position to supply all their needs. But over the past twenty years we have been helping a growing number of families, currently around seventy five, to at least enjoy Pesach and Rosh Hashana.

Your past generosity has helped us achieve this. But we are out of funds. In order to maintain our work the Simchas Yom Tov Fund needs to raise $40,000 over the next few weeks.

Do the numbers. You know how many families we are helping. You know how much food costs.

We appeal to you to do what you can to help.

Rabbi Benzion and Henya Milecki.

Guest at Seudat Shlishit
Rabbi Benny Lau at South Head

Join us at Seudat Shlishit straight after Mincha at 5.05 to hear Rabbi Benny Lau who is in Sydney discussing contemporary Israeli issues and solutions. He is the Rav of the Ramban Shul in Jerusalem and Director of the Centre of Judaism and Society and of the Institute for Social Justice. He is also a nephew of Rabbi Yisrael Lau, the former Chief Rabbi of Israel.

City 2 Surf
Support from South Head

South Head Youth have been very busy preparing to extend some hospitality and refreshments to the runners as they come through our area on Sunday.

At one of the most picturesque corners in Sydney - Oceanview (as the name implies) & Military Rd you can come and help give out a cookie and some water and join in the mitzvah of "hospitality to guests". After all this is our home and the thousands of runners are coming to visit (albeit just to run through our streets) so there is every reason to show them some wonderfully warm South Head hospitality. See you there from 8.45am!

KosherChef
Looking Quite the Part

Whether it was the brand new Chef's outfits or the new location (our very first outing in South Head's fabulous fleishig kitchen) everything seemed so much better at KosherChef this week!

City 2 Surf Baking
A Great Day for All

Thank you to all the kids and their mums who came along and helped us bake stacks of cookies for our hospitality stand for this Sunday's big run through our beautiful part of Sydney.

Never mind the Olympics the City 2 Surf is a huge event in Sydney and we are thrilled to be providing some refreshments to these amazing runners as they go past us. We will be set up on the corner of Oceanview Ave & Military Road from 8.45am so come say hi. Help yourself if you're a runner otherwise help us to refresh them on their way.

Birthday Club
For Birthday kids from Sivan, Tammuz, Av

Every three months we hold our very own Friday Night, Shabbat Birthday Club in the Shule. The children's Services are filled with birthday decorations and exciting children's services take place. Each children's service holds a birthday party with balloons, party hats, streamers and of course, chocolate cake, for all those celebrating their birthdays. All birthday children receive a blessing from the Rabbi and a special birthday gift! This year, our birthday gift is a Yo-Yo.

On Friday Aug-24th we are celebrating Sivan, Tammuz and Av birthdays so keep an eye out in the letterbox for your invitation. If you're not sure whether you're on our list or don't get an invite and think you should, get Mum or Dad to call Brookie on 0404 055 643 asap so you don't miss out!

Parsha Sheet
Shabbat Mevorchim - Eikev

Our Parasha this week is a continuation of Moshe's 5-week long speech to the Jewish people. Moshe teaches the Jewish people about the importance of Bentching, he reminds them of their sin with the golden calf and informs them that it is Hashem who holds the key to rain.

Read our Parasha sheet for more details.

Please share our Parasha sheet around your Shabbat table and let your family and friends explore the Parasha of the week together with you.

Looking forward to seeing you at South Head and wishing you a wonderful Shabbos in the best of health to enjoy it. On behalf of Rebbetzin Henya and all of us at South Head

Good Shabbos
Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM
