Dear[first_name]
After several weeks of travel, it's good to be finally back in the familiar surroundings of our own home and community.
To be in countries where it's often a struggle to understand and make yourself understood is certainly a very humbling experience. Yet, in spite of concerns of violence and anti-semitism in Europe based on what we had previously read in the media, we are happy to report that we neither experienced nor saw either. This in spite of the fact that for the most part I walked around with a kippah, rather than with a hat or cap, because of the often intense heat.
This of course doesn't mean that there is no cause for concern. The security around shules in Europe is substantial and the presence of armed soldiers in Jewish neighborhoods in France is confronting. The growth of Islam is highly visible - as seen both by modes of dress and the presence of mosques. Yet although we often found ourselves walking in areas with large Muslim populations we personally did not feel at risk.
While it's always important to be vigilant and not take unnecessary risks, it's no less important to be proudly and fearlessly Jewish wherever we are. And while a large number of French Jews are choosing to migrate to Israel, a Jew should make Aliyah out of love of Israel rather than fear. Certainly Israel is our national home and we cannot live without her. But a Jew should never have to run away. Rather we must work for a world where a Jew is safe no matter where he or she chooses to live.
With best wishes for a good and peaceful Shabbos, on behalf of all of us at South Head

The Modern Orthodox Rabbi who was a Chassid
Herbert (Chaim Zev) Bomzer was ordained a rabbi by Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, and also by Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik at Yeshiva University. Yet in 1987, at the behest of the Rebbe, he made a trip to Russia, where for all intents and purposes — he was the Rebbe’s emissary....." full story

SHCHARANSKY HERO OF OUR TIME, by Martin Gilbert
In July 1978 Anatoly Shcharansky was accused of treason and sentenced by a Moscow court to thirteen years in prison and labour camp. He was part of a group of Jews who had been refused exit visas from Soviet Russia to go to Israel. They alerted the Western world to the plight of the "refuseniks' as they were called. This is the story of a brave person, a lover of freedom and a devoted Jew.
