![]() A Brief Extract from My Travelogie After arriving in Kiev we head for its central shul in the company of Kolia (arranged by Andre, Rabbi Wilhelm of Chabad Zhitomir's PA) who will be our driver for the next few days. He's a pleasant chap and keen to do our bidding - although he understands not a word of English! This is going to be interesting.... We drive quickly through Kiev. This isn't Warsaw. More like Mexico, the difference between rich and poor is very apparent. Extremely tall, stark, very ugly tenement buildings are everywhere. And then there are a few uniquely styled apartment buildings unlike anything we have seen anywhere. As we enter the CBD there is again this contrast between beautiful, old style buildings housing major international labels and ugly soviet style blocks. Unfortunately we drive through quickly and there is no time to take photos. The beautiful shule has been fully renovated and is now run by Chabad and boasts three minyonim a day! I daven mincha, say Tehillim while mummy takes photos. Maariv is in an hour and would give me a chance of meeting the locals, but its fast getting dark and we must get to our next stop... Babi Yar is not something I was prepared for. It is not a distant forest but lies within the city limits... as it did then! This was no invisible act of mass murder. The second remarkable thing is not what it says... but what it doesn't. There is a memorial menorah as you enter... but nary a word about what happened here, the mass murder of tens of thousands of Jews cast into the deep ravine. The saddest part of all is that the place is so naturally beautiful. Just the kind of place to come for a pleasant stroll with the kids or the dog. Just the kind of place to go camping. And here lies the problem. While no sign indicates what occurred here, the place serves all these purposes. There are walking paths, benches, camping grounds and people walking dogs. The sign on the Menorah reads: "The blood of your brother's blood screams out to you from the earth". Maybe. But it's a cry that no one hears.
We Stand United
Alone but Together Whilst we won't be with you in Shul on Friday night, the Rebbetzin and I will certainly be there in spirit as the Kehilla recites Tehillim to remember and honour the eleven Israeli athletes who were murdered at the 1972 Olympic Games by Palestinian terrorists. As much as the IOC chooses to ignore this tragedy, we the Jewish people will stand together worldwide to honour our fallen. Shabbos morning Richard Balkin, Present of ZCNSW will address the Kehilla in his capacity as VP Zionist Federation of Australia to provide feedback from recently held conference meetings of world Zionist leaders, held in Israel. Richard will speak on Zionism in Australia – "The Exception not the Rule." Please join us this Motzoei Shabbos at 6:45pm (after Maariv and Eicha at 6:15pm) for our special Tisha B'Av programme featuring Rabbis Yossi Jacobson, Paysach Krohn and Zelig Pliskin. There will also be a short video message from both the Rebbetzin and I - From Russia With Love!
Shabbat of Vision
Seeing the Glorious This Shabbat is Shabbat Chazon, literally The Shabbat of Vision. The famous Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev explained that on Shabbat Chazon Hashem shows each and every one of us a vision of the glorious Third Temple and says to us: Keep this image in front of your eyes - it is yours if you strive for it. As we approach this very holy Shabbat, let us try to understand how this relates to each and everyone of us in a meaningful way. There was music and dancing; challah baking and crafts; a davening circle and they even made their own Machzor cover for Rosh Hashanah!
Bat Mitzvah Discovery Course
It's All About Learning!
Girls learnt all about their Neshama. They discovered how every person is unique and every person has their own talents. This is what makes us all so special! The girls made their very own candles to symbolise how the Neshama is compared to a flame!! For just like a flame always faces upward, our souls always yearn to go upward, all the way to Hashem! Visit South Head Youth Facebook to see lots of great pictures from the opening week.
KosherChefs
Each one a Great Little Cook What a great time our Kosherchef's had this week. ![]() They each made their own fried fish and spicy hot chips from scratch! While they were cooking they learnt the reason why Jewish people keep the Mitzvah of Kashrut. Pic: Sarah Uria, Aimee Shapiro and Miri Sarzin showing off their fish and chips! We have got some real talented cooks over here!
Parsha Sheet
Devarim Hazon
Additionally, Moshe begins to review all the laws and Mitzvot in the Torah, to all the Jewish people, and he reminds them of all the miracles Hashem performed for them. This is one very long speech. It is stretched out over the entire fifth book of the Torah, Sefer Devarim. Please share our Parsha sheet around your Shabbat table and let your family and friends explore the Parsha of the week together with you. That's it for another great week and may these days soon be transformed into days of gladness and rejoicing! On behalf of the Rebbetzin and all of us at South wishing you and your family a wonderful Shabbos and well over the Fast. Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM |
