As our journey of exploration of old Jewish communities comes to an end, there is one thing that really stands out. EVERY community had a Mikvah either in the same building or in close proximity to the Shule. Whether Ashkenazic or Sefardic, they all understood that a Mikvah was as integral to Jewish life and future as a Shule!
Many of these ancient Mikva'ot have been discovered and excavated.
Although most are of course in ruins we saw two really beautiful Mikva'ot that are still almost fully intact.
One in Carpentras (Provence) in Southern France (the underground spring that filled it 700 years ago still fills it today! ) The other, dating from the thirteenth century, is in the picturesque town of Besalu in North-Eastern Spain.
We were of course ecstatic. What better confirmation that in building the beautiful Mikvah next to our Shule we have carried forward an ancient Jewish tradition. And how proud would our ancestors be to know that seven hundred years after their demise a Mikvah in far off Sydney Australia was being used by some tens of women every month.
If any woman would like to connect to her Jewish past and to righteous women of generations past through immersion in Mikvah, please contact Rebbetzin Henya on 9371 7399 ext 7 or email or Rivkah Ray 9371 7300 ext 9 or email.
With best wishes for a good and peaceful Shabbos

TALES OUT OF SHUL; The Unorthodox Journal of an Orthodox Rabbi, by Emanuel Feldman
This remarkable, amusing and perceptive book describes forty years in one of the most successful careers in the American Rabbinate. Very few publications offer such revealing insights into human nature and contemporary Jewish history with wit and deep compassion.
