Shabbat Morning Guest Speaker: South Head is pleased to welcome Rabbi Zvi Hirschfield, teacher of Talmud and Jewish Thought at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, who is in Australia for Limmud-Oz
![]() Wednesday night certainly warmed and heartened all of us at South Head as over 350 people turned up mid week in freezing conditions for a night of comedy and kindness. The wow factor was palpable as we learned of the immense inroads being made by Miracle Drive and its aims of getting millions of pushkes around the world to help not just Jewish people but anyone needing help. And of course the Comedy... to be part of such a large crowd of happy people was very special. This was clearly a night of gratification for so many fans and for the making of new ones. Truly a night to remember. ______ This week also marked the first Yahrzeit of the three boys - Yaacov Naftali, Gilad Michael and Eyal - who were kidnapped on 14 Sivan and murdered shortly thereafter in Israel. Our enemy did not count on the strengthening of Am Yisrael as a consquence as "the" boys became "our" boys. Most Jews are aware of the Talmudic dictum, Kol Yisrael Areivim zeh b’zeh - which is translated literally as, “All Israel are responsible for each other.” But the word “Areivim” (from the root Arev ערב) does not only mean “responsible”. It also means “mixed” (Hence Erev means the time around sunset, a time which is a mixture of day and night. Similarly, an Eruv is something which mixes a community together making them like one big family and the area they live in like one big courtyard). We are responsible for each other because we are mixed into each other. We may appear to be separate entities, but in truth, as the Alter Rebbe writes in Chapter 32 of Tanya, we are really all ONE soul in different bodies. Finally, the Hebrew root “Arev” also means “sweet” - (ma’achal arev = sweet food). There is nothing sweeter nor more pleasant than Jews united as one and taking responsibility for each other. May the merit of the unity, love and responsibility that we displayed for each other a year ago continue unabated. With prayerful wishes for a Good and Peaceful Shabbos for both us here, and our brothers and sisters in Israel. On behalf of the Rebbetzin and all of us at South Head. Week Four - Point and Counterpoint Is Talmud synonymous with debate? Is Jewish law just a matter of opinion? Do the debates indicate the system is not Divine? In this week’s lesson we learned the extent and limits of debate in Jewish tradition. ![]() HeyKids! See you all tomorrow!!

LETTERS TO AUNTIE FORI, by Martin Gilbert Martin Gilbert's 90-year-old friend, Mrs B.K. Nehru, known to him as Auntie Fori, told him that she was not Indian but Jewish. She asked him to recommend a short history of the Jewish people. Martin Gilbert decided to write the history of the Jews for her in the form of letters which he sent to her week after week. This book is the collection of these letters and it is a wonderful introduction to Jewish history and the Jewish faith.
