We are really pleased to announce southhead.org's latest innovation. Our online calendar now sports ALL future Bar and Bat Mitzvot, Aufroofs and Weddings.
This should make it easier to find a suitable date for your simcha.
This is in addition to service times, candle-lighting times, etc.
Four Generations Celebrate Pidyon HaBen at South Head
A Pidyon HaBen is not a common event. It is only performed for a first-born male, delivered naturally, and whose grandfathers on both the mother's and father's side are neither Kohanim or Levi'im. It's even less usual for four generations of males to be represented at a Pidyon HaBen.
You can therefore imagine the joy when four generations of Wyner men came to South Head to celebrate the Pidyon HaBen of Tuvia Gershon - son of Daniel (right) & Talia; grandson of Robert (middle) & Gillian, and great grandson of Michael (left)
We wish Michael and his descendants lots of nachas and mazal - and many more simchas in the future!
Positive Feedback ... for The Daily Word
We all like to receive positive feedback so it felt great to receive a number of messages of encouragement including the following from congregants Marlene and Syd Ryan:
"We have been reading the DAILY WORD every day since you started sending it to us. We look forward to the inspiration and words of wisdom. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the effort you have made to inspire all of us to be better human beings."
This was in response to the email that I sent out earlier this week encouraging congregants to either subscribe to the Daily Word, or to read it daily on Twitter, FaceBook or southhead.org. If you would like to have it delivered to your email box, please be sure to drop Helen a line. After this week, only subscribers will continue to receive it via email.
Does G-d Really Care? ... are We Really as Puny as we Think?
Throughout the ages, religious philosophers have been confounded with the question: Why would G-d, Creator of a universe comprising a billion galaxies inhabited by a billion stars each, be concerned with us puny human beings, much less with the minutiae of our daily lives?
And hence what real difference does it make to G-d whether I light Shabbat candles before sunset or a moment afterwards, whether I eat kosher or eat kosher-style? Surely, if G-d cares at all, it is with the spirit of what we do, not with the mundane aspects of Jewish Law.
For an answer to these questions, and a dose of Jewish philosophy, click here.
