Dear Friends,

Pesach is the birthday of the Jewish People and tonight in Shul we will be celebrating the Jewish birthdays of many of our children.

We believe it is imperative to teach our children how to properly celebrate birthdays in a rich and meaningful Jewish way.

As many of you may be aware, our Youth Leaders have been visiting homes to celebrate your children's Jewish birthday, where they:

    • make a Lechaim (on a non alcoholic drink of course!)

    • learn some Torah

    • eat new fruit

    • give the child money so they can give their own Tzedokah

    • instruct the child in giving blessings to the family

    • make some new resolutions

    • conduct a birthday experiment, and of course

    • eat a delicious birthday cake

We encourage all parents to make contact with our Youth Leaders (Tzemach: 0412 482  770; Shaya: 0412 542 770; Shmuli: 0432 876 770 or email youth@southhead.org) to schedule a birthday visit and make your child’s next birthday truly meaningful. This is also a great way to forge the bonds between our Youth Leaders and your family.

But birthdays are not just for children!

The Jerusalem Talmud writes that on yourJewish birthday your mazal (referring here to your neshoma) is dominant and fills you with great spiritual power.

Therefore on your Jewish Birthday:

  1. Devote increased time and effort to your relationship with G-d through prayer, performing mitzvot and studying Torah.
  2. Take upon yourself a new mitzvah to fully commit to during the coming year.
  3. Give Charity
  4. Make a birthday party with family and friends where you make a short speech thanking Hashem for His bounty.
  5. Find a fruit which you have not yet eaten this season and recite the blessing "Shechyanu" - in which we thank G-d for giving us life, sustaining us, and enabling us to reach this new milestone in our lives.
  6. Reach out to fellow Jews, teaching them Torah in a spirit of brotherly love.
  7. Men should endeavour to be called to the Torah either on their birthday or on the preceding Shabbos.

If  you don’t know your Jewish birthday, please call Helen on 9371 7300 ext 4 and she will help you.

On behalf of the Rebbetzen and all of us at South Head, I wish you a safe, healthy and peaceful Shabbos.

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM

A Very Special Day
Rabbi Benzion Milecki

Speaking of birthdays, Tuesday is the Eleventh of Nissan - birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson. Although it is now twenty-one years since the Rebbe's passing, his legacy continues with ever increasing vigour. There is hardly a place in the world where his emissaries are not found. From the remotest parts of India to Vietnam and from deep inside Siberia to China - you can find idealistic young couples doing their utmost to create an awareness of Judaism.  They devote their lives, and sacrifice much, in assisting the local Jewish community where there is on, and individual Jews where there is not.

All this - the love of every single Jew, no matter where in the world - is the eternal legacy of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Many years ago, the Rebbe announced his mission - to ensure that there will no longer be a fifth son - a son who doesn't attend the seder and perhaps doesn't even know what a seder is. That mission may not yet be completed, but thanks to the Rebbe and those he inspired, we are well on the way.

On the Rebbe's birthday, let us each commit ourselves to doing what we can to reach out to our fellow Jews. We are all capable of this - each in our own way. Indeed, as our Sages have told us, "All Jews share mutual responsibility for each other - Kol Yisrael Areivim zeh b'zeh."  So let us do what we can to cause the spark within every Jew to ignite into a glowing flame.

And in so doing, may G-d Almighty grant that our own flame - and that of our children and grandchildren - continue to burn brightly and be held proudly aloft, until, and beyond, the coming of Moshiach - may he speedily redeem us.
