The Rebbe's Far-Reaching Vision
Even Greater in Death than in Life!

This week we will commemorate the 18th anniversary of Gimmel Tammuz, the day on which the Lubavitcher Rebbe moved on to

a much higher plane of existence. Even after all these years, I cannot say “passed away”. I do not want to send the Rebbe away. I want him to remain part of my life - part of our lives. And although I may no longer be able to see him in body - something which leaves a gaping hole in my heart - I know that he is still here, guiding us in a very tangible way.

Our rabbis say that “Gedolim Tzaddikim b’misosom yoser m’b’chayehem” - “the righteous are greater after their passing than during their life times” - and this is certainly true of the Rebbe.

Things that the Rebbe spoke about many years ago, are only now being understood and appreciated as will see from the following story involving one of our members.

One of the more difficult tasks one has as a Rabbi is verifying the Jewish status of couples who wish to marry. Often this is met with outright hostility. At other times great discomfort. After all, the person concerned is convinced that they are Jewish, was brought up Jewish, and therefore cannot under- stand what all the fuss is about.

From experience I can however say that it is not all that uncommon to find that a person who thought he or she was Jewish really is not. The situation can usually be rectified, but it does take time, and on occasion the wedding has to be postponed. This is one of the reasons that I insist on getting together all relevant documentation at the time of Bar/Bat Mitzvah. This way, no one needs to be unpleasantly surprised at the time of the wedding.

When looking at the Kesuvah of the parents of a bride some time ago, I was quite disturbed. Read more

New iPhone App
Check Out Preview!

As I said on Yom Kippur, we've been really hard at work upgrading all our computer systems this year. Indeed, we have already made great progress in migrating to the Cloud - after all, shule should be a Heavenly experience! Over the next few months, the benefits to members will become more apparent.

In the meantime, I'm really happy to announce a preview of our new iPhone App - available immediately. If you are an Android user, don't fret, it should work quite well on that platform as well.

Just key in www.southhead.org on your iPhone and take a look. I'd welcome feedback!

JLI's Fifth Birthday

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM  completed his 180th JLI Class this week with the close of the current course "The Art of Marriage".

The Jewish Learning Institute's courses have taken students on an awesome journey; from why we care about Israel in "The Land & the Spirit" to the myths and mysteries of Judaism in "Fascinating Facts". They have ascended to the heavenly heights in an "Oasis in Time" (Shabbat) and been grounded in "Money Matters". They have been inspired to greatness in "Portraits of Leadership" and dealt with the abyss in "Beyond Never Again". They have found themselves in "Biblical Reflections", questioned themselves in "Talmudic Ethics" and have dealt with the really hard issues in "Medicine and Morals". And these were but a few of the stops in the never ending quest "Towards a More Meaningful Life".

Inspired by Rabbi Milecki,  three hundred and seventy people have viewed the world from a uniquely Jewish perspective, many returning for multiple courses. With an average course attendance of ninety students, they have made South Head the largest JLI chapter in Australia. What's more, they have become part of the largest Adult Jewish Education network in the world - with over 350 chapters spanning the globe.

Registrations for next year's courses, The Kabbalah of You, Personal Ethics and Legends of the Talmud is now open. Call 9371 7300 for an Early Bird Discount, and an even greater savings if you register for all three courses.

Parsha Sheet
Korach

Moshe's first cousin, Korach becomes jealous that he was not made the Kohen Gadol. In his rage, he creates a rebellion against Moshe. But will Hashem let Korach fight against Moshe? What will his punishment be?

Read Parshat Korach to find out!

Please share our Parsha sheet around your Shabbat table and let your family and friends explore the Parsha of the week together with you.

As mentioned above this Shabbos marks 18 years since the Rebbe's passing. While a Yahrzeit is a time when the soul of every person - and certainly the soul of a Tzaddik - rises from height to height and from heaven to heaven, a true shepherd is one who never forsakes his flock.  No matter how high the Rebbe ascends, his boundless love, concern and prayers for every single Jew never cease. Let us all, this Shabbos, rededicate ourselves to the Rebbe's mission and values and in so doing become appropriate vessels for his bountiful blessings and prayers on our behalf.

On behalf of the Rebbetzin and all of us at South Head wishing you and your family an inspiring and meaningful Shabbat.

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM
