![]() A message from the Rabbi
It's been a long wait, but our new South Head Mikveh has finally had it's fill of rain water. The rain water catchment areas are now full and the Mikva'ot are almost ready go into operation. Only a small amount of internal building work remains.
The wonderful group of women who comprise the South Head Mikveh Committee, headed by Rebbetzen Henya, are at the same time hard at work finalizing the decor, furniture and various special touches which will make the Mikveh experience truly spiritual and uplifting.

It shouldn't be long at all!
In the meantime, the Vessel Mikvah is already in operation and congregants are welcome to make use of it. Come to the synagogue during office hours and you will be given access.

Careful How You Judge!
Azaria and the Jews
Mazal Tov Lindy and Michael!
It's hard to put into words the very deep emotions that are running through me. Exoneration! Finally! Even after all these years, I can easily relive the sympathy I felt for Lindy and together with that, the disgust I felt when Ian Barker QC publicly celebrated his victory the night after the conviction. Truly a dark chapter in Australian legal history - and one for which many people need to answer. It seems that although the wheels of justice turn slowly, they do turn, at least in this case.
Ever since then I have questioned both our adversarial system and the jury system. How can laymen without scientific background possibly grasp complex circumstantial and forensic evidence? Furthermore there were indications that rather than giving Lindy a presumption of innocence, at least some of the jury assumed she was guilty until proven innocent.
I also remember being shocked when I read in The Age that Azaria was a Hebrew word meaning "sacrifice in the desert". As a Rabbi who knows Hebrew I knew it didn't - it means "God is my Helper". I immediately identified the accusations against the Chamberlains with the Blood Libels that our people have suffered throughout the centuries.
For more on the Chamberlain affair from a Jewish perspective, come to shule this evening (Friday night)!

Loaves of Love
Change of Date: Next on June 28th
At Loaves of Love we bake Challah's for the elderly and we deliver it to them too! And guess what?! You get to bake your very own Challah to take home for Shabbat too!
The best part of the program is seeing the smiles on the elderly's faces as you present them with their Challah for Shabbat.
We have just begun this very NEW and EXCITING program for all girls aged 8-12. Loaves of Love will take place every first Thursday of each month for just a small fee of $3. Please call Brookie to confirm your place.

Brookie's Parsha Sheet ![]() The Jewish people are just about to enter the land of Israel, when suddenly they have a dip in their faith.
* What if the land of Israel is not good enough?
* What if the giants living in Israel crush us?
* What if the seven nations living in Israel destroy us?
The Jewish people become very nervous and decide to send spies to check out the land of Israel before they enter… a decision which leads to a disaster!
Also in this weeks Parsha is the Mitzvah of Tzitzit and the Mitzvah of Hafrashat Challah - one of the 3 Mitzvot given specifically to the Jewish women. Please share our Parasha sheet around your Shabbat table and let your family and friends explore the Parasha of the week together with you.
That's it for this week. Stay tuned next week for another major announcement. South Head Synagogue - the place it all happens!
On behalf of Rebbetzin Henya and all of us at South Head, I wish you a warm and inspiring Shabbos! |
