Dear Friends,

Henya & I extend a warm invite to each and every one of you personally to be our guest in Shul this evening as we celebrate the Festival of Lights.

Our children's programme will have the kids enthralled as the Chanukah Man eats, breathes, juggles and balances the flames - all while skipping on his unicycle!!! Must be seen to be believed! Starts 5.45pm and all children will receive Chanukah Gelt and a dreidel.

The whole evening offers something for every member of the family and of course the women and girls will have the opportunity of lighting Shabbat candles with our Rebbetzin.

For the adults, we kick off at 6.00pm with Mincha, followed by Kabbalat Shabbat at 6.10pm. We will then proceed  to the Herbert Hall for our Grand Communal Menorah Lighting, Communal Shabbat Candle Lighting, and a delicious Kiddush of Latkes, Donuts and Scotch to wash it down. We will then return upstairs at 7.00pm to conclude the service.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Some of you may know that each week Chony Milecki and his colleague Benni Friedman post a 90second video of bright and energetic Divrei Torah. The production is really good and the content is even better. Here is one to Share the Light and G-d willing I will share these gems with you each week.

______

The Dreidel Through the Ages

The dreidel has evolved from the humble clay or wood version that we many of us hand-crafted as children, to the "hi-tech" multi-media version, replete with lights and musical accompaniment, that can be now be found on shop shelves and in many homes. Move aside plasma screens, the dreidel is the way to go. But as in Judaism in general, embracing the future never comes at the expense of forsaking the past. Even today's ultra-modern dreidels still sport those old Jewish letters: Nun, Gimmel, Hay, Shin.

What's the significance of these letters, and why do they specifically appear on the dreidel? Click here

With best wishes for a Bright & Beautiful Shabbos, on behalf of the Rebbetzen and all of us at South Head.

Parasha Sheet
Miketz

Q. Is Chanukah still relevant today? For the first time in Jewish history, the vast majority of Jewish people live in countries where they can practice their religion freely without oppression. If this is the case, is it necessary for us to relive the Chanukah story and reinforce its message?

To learn all about the Parasha, download our Parasha sheet and share it around your Shabbat table so you and your family and friends can explore the Parasha of the week together.

Influencing the Future
Professor Alan Dershowitz

Then Rebbe wrote a long and beautiful P.S., explaining how one influences other human beings. All people — but especially politicians, who often act out of expediency more than conviction –should be engaged in a positive way. That way, we can try to influence them.  Full story..

The Social Animal
After Kiddush Shabbat Shiur

Join us straight after the Kiddush in the Herbert Hall and find out why we live the way we do.
