At a time when anti-Semitism and international hypocrisy towards Jews and the Jewish State have risen to levels not seen since the Holocaust, it is imperative that we support and cherish each other far more than in the past. This is further underlined by the period in which we find ourselves, the Three Weeks. It is during this period before Tisha B’Av that we mourn the destruction of our Holy Temple and pray for its speedy restoration. Our Sages tell us that the Temple was destroyed because of baseless hatred of one Jew towards another - Sinat Chinam. The antidote to Sinat Chinam, explains the Lubavitcher Rebbe, is Ahavat Chinam - blindly reaching out to other Jews, whether you know them or not, whether you agree with them or not. One way of doing this is by giving our opponents a fair hearing. By this I mean REALLY listening to what they are saying - rather than jumping to conclusions (based on one’s preconceived notions) about what we think that they are saying. Do you remember how each of the Four Sons of Pesach are introduced? The wise son - what does the he say? The wicked son - what does he say? etc. Before responding - we give each of the sons, even the wicked son, the opportunity to say his piece, carefully listening to what he is saying. More often than not the respect that is engendered by paying attention and listening carefully to what the other is saying will itself lessen or even entirely neutralise a conflict. At the very least, it will limit the possibility of disputes becoming personalised attacks. Many ideological conflicts originated not in ideology at all, but in hurt egos. What better way of minimising conflict than by building the ego of an "opponent"? And what simpler way of doing this than by giving him/her a fair hearing. King David says: G-d will give Strength to His People; (and how is this achieved?) G-d will bless His People with Peace. We all need fortitude, fearlessness and inner strength at this time. The best way to achieve this is through cultivating peace among ourselves.
