What's Doing on the Home Front?

As I write these lines the soldiers of the IDF have entered Gaza to seek out and destroy the terrorist infrastructure. May Hashem protect them and guide them to their objectives quickly so that they can return to their families in peace. Our thoughts are with them constantly.

In every battle the actions of those on the home front are of great importance - both to draw down Hashem’s blessings and to boost the morale of the troops on the war front.

Indeed in this week’s parasha, Moshe exhorts the Israelites: Shall your brothers go to war while you stay here?

We too must participate in the war, both physically and spiritually.

Physically: By understanding the morality of Israel’s position and engaging in both traditional media and Social Media in defence of Israel. The web is full of propaganda, conspiracy theories and outright lies - and far too many people believe them. Unfortunately, even some of our fellow Jews are instrumental in spreading lies against us.

As an example, I refer you to two articles I published this week on Linkedin refuting the nonsense that is propagated against us. Look here and here. You can also find a number of informative articles on my FaceBook page

It is also of utmost importance that we stand together. If at all possible I urge you to attend the community rally which will take place this Sunday. See below.

Spiritually: There are a number of mitzvot that we should endeavour to do. For the time being I would like to suggest the following for their specific ability to bring Hashem’s protection and success on our brothers and sisters in Israel.

For Women:

Light Shabbat candles ON TIME (this week at 4.48 but no later than 5.05) and while doing so praying for our brothers and sisters and setting aside money for Tzeddakah. This is based on the Midrash which says:

“If you guard the Lights of Shabbat I will show you the Lights of Zion"

For Men:

Put on tephlilin as often as you can on weekdays. It really takes only a couple of minutes to put on tephilin and say the first paragraph of Shema and if you haven’t time in the morning you can do so any time before sunset. If you have forgotten how and need assistance please feel free to contact me rabbi@me.com. The importance of tephlin is based on the verse, “All the peoples of the world shall see that the name of G-d is upon you and they will fear you (Deuteronomy 28:10)” referring to tephiln ) (Talmud Brachot 6a)

As the "Land towards which the Eyes of G-d are directed from the beginning of the year until the end of the year”, it is also the Land towards which we direct our eyes and our prayers. May Hashem protect her and her people always.

Please join us in shul tonight as we recite Psalms for the safety and success of our troops. Kabbalat Shabbat 5:45pm

Wishing you a Good, Happy and Peaceful Shabbos

Life's Mision as an Educator
Rabbi Yossi Nemes

" My mother always had this tremendous desire to learn — both religious and secular subjects — but she had no opportunity due to the upheaval. So now she was putting her all into it and excelling in her studies. By age 19, she was already prepared to start teaching in the Reshet Chabad public school system in Israel, and she received
the Rebbe’s approval for this move." Read more...
