Stop Press: We will tonight have the pleasure of hearing Rabbi Benjamin Yasgur of Boca Raton. Rabbi Yasgur is the former Head of the US Agency for Jewish Education and author of “Torah Conversations with Nechama Lebowitz”. He will talk on, “A Footnote and Header to a Missed Opportunity.” The Rebbetzin and I are thrilled to announce the birth, yesterday, the 12th of Tammuz, of our beautiful granddaughter, born to our dear children Rabbi Levi & Nechama Dina. May she grow up l’Torah, l’Chupa u’l’maasim tovim and be a source of nachas and pride to her parents, her grandparents, her great grandparents, and all of Klal Yisrael together with Jewish children everywhere. ![]() Dear [first_name], As you are all aware, Operation Protective Shield is currently proceeding in Israel. Thank G-d, in spite of intense rocket attacks from Gaza, there have to date not been Israeli casualties, whereas Hamas has sustained massive damage to both its leadership and infrastructure. We pray to Hashem that He continue to guide our soldiers and protect His People in His Land. As I write, the situation in Israel is evolving on the ground. Using my FaceBook page I try to share with the community important articles, as well as my own thoughts and observations, as they occur. I believe that this is a far better way to communicate with congregants in response to real-time events. You can find my page here (Please note: this is not South Head’s FaceBook page, which is reserved for community announcements, but my personal page). Although I am happy to “friend” congregants and readers, it is not necessary to do so as with few exceptions, I have made these articles and comments public. Fast of the 17th of Tammuz
Operation Protective Shield: Do Your Bit! As Jews we believe and know that the body is connected and influenced by the soul; that the physical world is affected by the spiritual. This Tuesday, the Fast of the Seventeenth of Tammuz, is the first day of the Three Weeks of mourning that commemorate the destruction of our First and Second Temples. In the haftorah that is read prior to Tisha B’Av Isaiah exhorts us: “Zion will be redeemed through Mishpat (Torah) and its captives through Tzeddakah (charity)”. Once again the Jewish People have experienced non-ending violence against us and we most certainly require redemption. I ask that, especially during these next three weeks, each of us —men, women and children —make a special effort to put aside a few coins for Tzeddakah each day (to any Israeli cause that you wish) followed by a prayer for the safety and well-being of our brothers and sisters in Israel and our ultimate Redemption through Moshiach. What is important here is not so much the amount, but the regular giving. Furthermore, I would like to urge once again that all men put on tephilin each day while they recite the Shema. It needn’t take longer than five minutes and is spiritually very effective in neutralizing our enemies. This our Sages made clear when they said that Moses’ statement “All the peoples of the world shall see that the name of G-d is upon you and they will fear you (Deuteronomy 28:10)” refers to tephilin. Should anyone require assistance in learning how to put on tephilin please do not hesitate to call me. Similarly, should anyone wish their tephilin to be checked (this should be done every three or four years) or wish to purchase new tephilin (the shule makes no profit on these high quality tephilin), please call the office so that arrangements can be made. While world leaders beat their chests and think they know what Israel should do, for our part, we continue to trust in G-d as it is written, “It is better to trust in G-d than to trust in princes (Psalms 118:9)”. And moved by our prayers, charity and Torah may G-d continue to awaken and guide the leaders of the nations to the path of justice and truth as it is written “the heart of a king is in the hand of G-d... charity and justice are more precious to G-d than sacrifices Proverbs 21:1-3)”. With prayerful wishes that these days (the Three Weeks) be transformed into days of happiness and joy. On behalf of the Rebbetzin and all of us at South Head, to all our readers the world over, wishing you a safe, peaceful and Good Shabbos. "The world was wrong. When they thought that the most important fact about the Rebbe was that here was a man with thousands of followers, they missed the most important fact: That a good leader creates followers, but a great leader creates leaders." Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks ![]() Pinchas Question: In Parashat Pinchas, Hashem once again commands Moshe to take a census of the Jewish people. While all the other censuses were counted by Moshe alone, when Moshe took this census he was required to have the tribal leaders assist in the count of the other tribes. Why is this so? Read more..
South Head Library
It's been a very long labour (of love) to get our Library ready to serve our community and we are almost there thanks to the very hard work and dedication of our Librarian Sylvia Tuback and her right hand woman Roz Fisher (seen here enjoying some special impromptu learning with Rabbi Milecki) "Greet Every Human Being with a
Kind Face" Rabbi Boruch Zaichyk ‘Hevay mekabel es ha’adam b’saver panim yafos — Greet every human being with a kind face.’” Those were the words the Rebbe used. He went on to say that a kind face, a smile, will influence another person much more than anything else. I was seventeen or eighteen year old at the time and I didn’t realize the value of this advice. Read more.. Master a Mitzvah
