Rosh HaShana
For Young and Old

Dear [first_name] ,

When the Clock Strikes Midnight

Saturday night for most people is a time to "go out". It's a time to to catch a movie or a concert, to go to a bar and party, or enjoy a dinner with family and friends. May I suggest that this Saturday night, after you "go out" you "stay out" just a little longer ... till the clock strikes midnight.

With the imminent approach of the new year and the Days of Awe, our preparations for the High Holidays have moved into high gear. When you come to Shule this Shabbat you will find the Synagogue dressed in white in preparation for the Selichot that we begin this Motozoei Shabbat (Saturday night) at midnight.

I really encourage and urge you to "stay out" for Selichot. Coming to shule at midnight is a highly spiritual experience - in a certain way the feeling is far more intimate than during Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur - and Chazan Yehoshua really puts his all into inspiring us all.

Oh, and in case you are wondering, Selichot is for both men and women! Really hope to see you there.

Operation South Head Youth

Anyone who's been anywhere near Shule over the past week would have noticed a great buzz around the place. Our preparations for Yom Tov this year have been all the more exciting because of the tremendous programs we have in store for our kids. Brookie and our new Youth Shluchim, Yacov and Yisroel,  have been working round the clock to make sure that what we have on offer is second to none and guaranteed to help our Youth get the most out of the Holy Days.

It begins Wednesday evening!

* Childrens' Services on Rosh Hashanah (6.05pm and 10.15am including the Grand Birthday Party on First Day) and Yom Kippur (5.40pm and 11am) will also give kids the chance to win fantastic prizes like an IPod, a $100 gift voucher to Toys R Us or your chance to go parasailing with our Youth Director.

* Our Youth Minyan will provide an easy-to-follow service designed especially for teens and young adults. An inspiring Heimishe atmosphere led by Rabbi Dovid Sebban and Chazan Mark Friedgut.

* On First Day Rosh Hashanah be part of the Grand Surprise Birthday Party for Odom & Chava then Second Day learn about the 7 days of creation and play exciting games based on the theme of creation of the world!.

* Simchat Torah night we have A World of Bubbles where children will create an edible Torah, dance with a real Sefer Torah and enjoy a fascinating bubble show. The fun begins at 5.30 Thurs Sep-26 AND includes the all important Grand Raffle prize draw!

Rebbetzin Henya and I bless you and your family with a year of positive change and growth - as you recognize, and then realize, the full potential that G-d has given you to make the world a better and more G-dly place through improving your own life and the lives of all around you - while enjoying good health, nachas from your families and friends, and material abundance.

Ketiva v'Chatima Tova l'Shana Tova U'Metuka to you and all your family.

Shabbat Shalom and best wishes from all of us at South Head

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM

Blowing of the Shofar
The Sound of Yom Tov

One of the most central aspects of Rosh HaShana is the blowing of the Shofar. Rabbi Saadia Gaon, one of the earliest Jewish philosophers, gives ten reasons for the sounding of the Shofar; five of which are listed here:

1. Rosh HaShana is the anniversary of the creation of Adam. Upon his creation, Adam proclaimed G-d King of the universe. As the coronation of a King is preceded by the sounding of horns and trumpets, the blowing of the shofar  on Rosh HaShana reminds us of this very first coronation and the need to re-proclaim G-d as king every single year.

2. The piercing sound of the shofar is a call to repentance.

3. The shofar reminds of the shofar of Mt Sinai where we accepted G-d as King and agreed to abide by His commandments.

4. The ram's horn reminds us of Abraham's readiness to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac for the sake of G-d. In the end, he brought a ram as a sacrifice instead.

5. The shofar reminds us of the Messiah who will sound a shofar at the time of our redemption.
