Not IF,
but WHEN!

"See, I give before you this day blessing and curse. The blessing WHEN you will listen to G-d...and the curse, IF you will not listen..."

So begins this week's parasha.

What comforting words!

Doing right and the resultant blessings are not a matter of if, but when! No matter what our situation now, spiritually or materially, we are assured that ultimately it will all be good - we will do right, and we will be blessed.

What this means is that good and blessing are the very fabric of our nature. They are always there, just bursting to get out. And get out, they most certainly will!

In contrast, bad behaviour, and curses, are external to us. They may or may not eventuate - but even if they do, they never represent who we truly are or what will eventually become of us. As such, even if we suffer, let's not be discouraged. Never forget that as dark as the tunnel is, it will come to an end. Not so the infinite G-dly light which lies beyond it, which with just a little push on our part, will burst forth from within us.

A thought to keep in mind as we begin our approach to the High Holy Day period when we commit to leading better lives and ask G-d to shower His blessings upon us!

Eat, Drink and Be ..
Mindful of those in Need

The High Holy Days are almost upon us.

On a certain Rosh HaShana some 2,500 years ago Ezra and Nechemiah gathered the small remnant of Jews who had returned from the Babylonian Exile. Many had strayed far from the traditions of our people and with the Days of Judgement upon them, the mood was somber.

Nehemiah said to them: “Go your way, eat rich food, and imbibe sweet drinks, but send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy unto our Lord. Do not be grieved for the joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10)

Judaism is not a religion of harsh penance, and certainly not a religion of abstinence. Eating and drinking well with friends and family is a time honoured way of showing respect and honour for our Holy Days. But there is one rider: ensure that your joy and abundance is shared by those who cannot afford to prepare festively for themselves.

As a result of your previous generosity we have been able to ensure that over 60 families have sufficient groceries, meat, fruit & vegetables and wine to properly celebrate the Holy Days Festival.

I therefore appeal to you to once again dig deep so that we can continue to fulfil this important mitzvah.

As always, you can honour your friends and family who host you for Yom Tov meals with a donation to the Simchat Yom Tov Fund in their honour,  which we will acknowledge with a beautiful card. Click here to download a donation form.

May Hashem reward all those who contribute to this important cause, measure for measure, by giving you parnassah and wealth, and ensuring that neither you nor your loved ones are ever in need.

On behalf of the Rebbetzin and all of us at South Head, I wish you a Good & Peaceful Shabbos.

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM
