A Time for Joy!

Dear [first_name],

"When Adar enters, we increase in joy; when Av enters, we decrease in joy."

I heard from my predecessor at South Head, Rabbi Tobias Silberman, a beautiful insight on this passage in the Talmud. There are occasions when a Jew must increase in joy, and other occasions when a Jew must decrease in joy. There is however NO occasion in which a Jew may not be joyful.

In a similar vein, the Shulchan Aruch - Orach Chaim begins with a quote from King David, "I place G-d before me constantly" and concludes with a quote from King Solomon, "It is good to have a joyful heart constantly".

The Chida explains that these two statements are the "Two Tablets of Stone" that must be engraved upon every Jewish heart. And indeed, they are two sides of the same coin, for it is not possible to believe in G-d and not constantly joyful, nor is it possible to be truly joyful without constantly placing one's faith in G-d.

Living in this wonderful country there is much to be joyful about, and there is much reason to have faith in G-d. Let us hope that we appreciate this more fully as we move further into Adar - and that the joy in this realization permeate our being with gratitude and a desire to contribute more goodness to the world.

With best wishes for a good and inspiring Shabbos, on behalf of the Rebbetzin and all of us at South Head.

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM

More on Fathering

Last week I wrote about Dr Bruce Robinson, Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Western Australia. He leads a prestigious national asbestos research centre there and helped discover breakthroughs in cancer immunology and asbestos disease and new blood tests and treatments for cancer. He also co-founded The Fathering Project and has written many books and frequently speaks about making fathers realise the importance of their role in a child’s life. For his contributions to medicine and fathering, he was named the 2013 West Australian of the Year. He wrote the following newspaper article then.

How to be a great dad
In celebration of Father's Day and to acknowledge the importance of fathers, Professor Bruce Robinson, director of the Fathering Project, UWA, and Western Australian of the Year 2013 offers dads the 10 top tips from The Fathering Project.

The Rice Diet
Rabbi Dov Lent

Eventually, I got involved with the Hillel House on campus, where I started to give classes on various Jewish topics, which became quite popular. I also arranged for observant Jews to spend Shabbat on the campus from time to time. So rather than the secular environment influencing me in a negative way, I was able to influence it in a positive way. I was able to influence several students to begin observing Yiddishkeit, who eventually married and raised wonderful observant families. All thanks to the Rebbe's advice. Read More

Parashat Terumah

Q. In this week’s Parasha we read about the building of the Mishkan and all the different materials that were used to make it. However, the Beit Hamikdash was built only from stone. Why is that?
