South Head Happenings

A Vibrant Week Coming Up

This coming week has so much to offer the whole family and is a wonderful reflection of what a dynamic community we have at South Head.

Motzei Shabbat sees the screening of Hanoch Teller's cinematic triumph "The Chassidic Legacy of Brotherhood at 8.00pm. This is much more than a film with its beautiful music score provided by Avram Fried, Abish Brodt and others.

And yes bring the kids! This is definitely one for the whole family. There are still a few pre paid tickets available so contact Helen but be quick! (See flier for full details)

Tuesday night - First night Yom Tov brings us together for our traditional Shavuot Dinner in the uniquely warm atmosphere of the Herbert Hall. Dinner from 6.00 - 8.00 followed by inspiring and entertaining talks from our own Rabbi Benji Levy and our special guest Hanoch Teller.

After dinner, starting at 9.00pm our Panel Discussion with possibly the most important topic ever discussed at a Tikkun Leil Shavuot. Whilst some might find this a little uncomfortable we can no longer afford to shy away from what seems to be a pervasive and increasing spectre in the world-wide community. It would be remiss of any parent to miss the opportunity to hear some of the strategies which will be proposed for keeping our kids safe.

Shavuot Wednesday morning is all about the kids with a fun filled Rockin' Balloon & Ice Cream Party. (Full details following in Brookie's report)

Everyone here has worked really hard to bring all these events together and our reward will be the satisfaction we see on peoples' faces at the many and varied functions.

ISRAEL
The Big Turnaround

In my message accompanying the AGM report for 2012, I shared some thoughts as we celebrated sixty-five years since the re-establishment of Jewish sovereignty in the State of Israel.

In honour of the 46th anniversary of the re-unification of Jerusalem during the miraculous Six Day War, I am herewith including an extract of that message.

I am writing these lines during Sefirat HaOmer -  a period that commemorates both a) the crushing of the Bar Kochba revolt and the dispersion of the Jewish People from their Land in the second century of the common era and b) the return of the Jewish People to their Land in the twentieth century.

The defeat of the Bar Kochba revolt - or as our Sages call it Churban Betar - was more than a national tragedy in which 600,000 of our best sons, among them the 22,000 students of Rabbi Akiva, were killed. It was more than a human catastrophe in which so much Jewish blood was spilt that the Romans didn’t have to manure the captured fields for decades.

Churban Betar was the beginning of 1900 years of exile from Jerusalem and dispersion from Judea!

Churban Betar signaled the beginning of expulsions, pogroms and humiliation of Jews culminating in the Holocaust! Although the Holocaust was certainly unique in its ferocity and its scope, it was the inevitable nadir of a succession of events that began with the 2,000 year dispersion that followed the defeat of Bar Kochba.

And it is precisely when we commemorate the tragedy of Bar Kochba - the period between Pesach and Shavuot - that Jewish pride and sovereignty were returned to us: on the fifth of Iyar 1948 and on the 28th of Iyar 1967.

On behalf of the Rebbetzin and the whole South Head family I wish you a Good and Peaceful Shabbos and a Chag Sameach. May you receive the Torah inwardly and with joy.

Brookie Reports

We had an awesome morning at Mummy and Me as the children stuffed their very own Torah scrolls for Shavuot. We also sang and danced in our beautiful davening circle; baked challah and so much more.

Mummy and Me is a multi sensory experience to stimulate language skills, motor development and socialisation. It's a great beginning to your child's Jewish education!

Shavuot Morning
Rockin' Balloons & Ice Cream

Bring the whole family to hear the Ten Commandments and make your very own edible Har Sinai. There will be ice cream for everyone and the most astonishing balloon twisting entertainment. There's balloon sculpting and games and every child gets to take home their very own balloon. See flier for full details.

Looking forward to seeing you all in Shule and wishing you a Good Shabbos and Good YomTov.
