Dear [first_name],

Who doesn’t want to be a success?

But what is success, and how do you achieve it?

In our brand new JLI Course, HOW SUCCESS THINKS, commencing Monday evening, 7 November, and Tuesday morning, 8th November, we will attempt to give you the Keys To Success in a course based on both traditional Jewish sources and the empirical, scientific findings of the Positive Psychology movement.

This course has been endorsed in the US by leading experts and has been approved for Continuing Education Credits for physicians and mental health practitioners by the Washington School of Psychiatry, the American Psychological Association and other professional bodies.

To reserve your place and obtain special early-bird pricing (ending Monday), please either email Shmuly on shmuly@southhead.org, call 0401-558-223, or click here.

THANK YOU!!!

We had one of the most lively Simchas Torah’s ever this year - with a very successful change of format enabling the women and girls to be closer to the action, and bringing the men closer to the “front”.

A HUGE thank you to Rebbetzen Henya who, with her band of dedicated helpers, beautifully catered the after-Hakafot party which was enjoyed by all. A VERY BIG thank you to Racheli Butnaro, Natalie Carr, Pam Etkind, Anne Fine, Anna Gonzales, Julie Gordon, Cheryl Kaftel, Judy Kaye, Judy Maynard, Bev Michaelis, Marilynne Mill, Kathy Miller, Kirsten Miller, Margo Miller, Natalie Narunsky, Evelyn Shagrin, Mandy Shapiro, Nadine, Shapiro, Evelyn Shagrin, Gloria Simmons and Sue Shneier.

It was really heart-warming seeing so many people working together to make the function a success - a truly wonderful example of a community working together to make something big and beautiful.

Thanks to Rabbi Shmuly for co-ordinating our new dancing format downstairs and to our Youth Leaders for the a great kids programme. A special thank you and a warm farewell to Shmuli Rosenbaum and to Efraim Lehrer for leading our Youth Programmes over the High Holy Days and for overseeing the transition to our new Youth Leaders, Shimi Russel and Elimelech Felberman.

And to those of you who bid at our pre-Hakafot Auction, thank you so very much for your generous support! We raised the princely sum of $8,400 for Simchat Yom Tov, families in need, so that they too can feel the happiness and celebrate Yom Tov, in a truly joyous fashion.

Finally, as a first-time major change of format, we learnt important lessons on how to make it even better next year, especially when it comes to even further involving women and girls. For starters, as per the Rebbetzen’s suggestions: There will a) be a finer-grade mechitza or trees, and b) as part of each Hakafa all the Sifrei Torah will be brought to the women to afford them the opportunity to kiss them. Other suggestions are of course welcome!

LET THERE BE LIGHT!

“It was evening, and it was morning One Day. And G-d said, 'Let there be Light!’"

As I explained on Kol Nidrei night - in Jewish thought evening comes before morning, dark before light, struggle before success.

In fact, the greatest light is darkness itself - it contains an energy that revealed light can only hope to attain.

Even in the physical universe this is true - science tells us that up to 95% of the universe is made up of Dark Energy and Dark Mass.

And as the Kabbalists explain, it is G-d’s Darkness that has the power to reflect G-d’s Essence far more than His Revealed Light. They go even further and explain that it is G-d’s Darkness that is the true source of all Creation.

And yet G-d wants us to take Darkness and transform it into revealed Light.

This is the entire purpose of Creation!

Engraved in my mind are the Rebbe’s words to Professor Avner Shaki, leader of the the Mizrachi Party, “Nothing good or worthwhile comes easily! That is the way G-d created the universe, first darkness and only then light!"

So when we experience or encounter darkness, struggle or sadness - instead of struggling to understand it, let us remember that it’s our job to harness and transform it.

Or as the Zohar says, the greatest sweetness, is when bitter is transformed to sweet; the greatest light, when darkness is transformed to light; the greatest good, when evil becomes a force for good.

So let’s use the energy of our dark experiences to propel us to heights that we never imagined possible.

With best wishes for a Good Shabbos, and a wonderful new beginning, on behalf of the Rebbetzen and all of us at South Head

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM

Warren Goldstein was appointed as chief rabbi of South Africa in 2003 when he was just 32 years old. He was born in Pretoria, the son of a High Court judge; he is fourth-generation South African. Rabbi Goldstein trained as both a lawyer and rabbi (and is a qualified dayan) and is a scholar of both Judaism and the law. According to Wikipedia:

While practising as a rabbi he completed his Ph.D. at the University of the Witwatersrand Law School. His Ph.D. thesis compare

d western and Jewish law and was published as a book entitled Defending the Human Spirit: Jewish Law's Vision for a Moral Society. Rabbi Goldstein's thesis is that Talmudic law was ahead of its time in terms of political rights, women's rights, criminal law and poverty alleviation. "I see Western laws as coming round full circle to positions always held by Talmudic law."  Read More

I Have A Promise
Rabbi Yitzchok Arnold

When he was a few months old, he began waking up in the middle of the night and crying. The doctor said he was fine, so I wrote to the Rebbe, who responded with instructions that we should check the mezuzah on the door. I took the mezuzah down and brought it to a scribe, who asked me, “Who rolled this mezuzah scroll?” I said, “I did.” He shook his head because I hadn’t rolled it at all, I had folded it, and when I did that, I caused a crack in the word uveshachbecha which means “when you lie down.” Naturally, I bought a new mezuzah scroll, and Shlomo was just fine after that. Parasha Sheet
Parashat Bereishit

Q. Adam’s life in the Garden of Eden was considered the epitome of ‘good living’. Yet Adam never had a chance to enjoy complete rest or relax free of duties and responsibilities. Even before violating G-d’s command, Adam’s job was to work and watch the Garden of Eden. Could G-d have not shown greater kindness by creating a perfect world where nothing would be lacking, work would be superfluous and labour would be unnecessary? Read More
