Rabbi's Message
How Success Thinks

Dear [first_name],

JLI is back again with a new and exciting six-week course commencing in November - How Success Thinks.

While definitions of success vary by society and culture, and from individual to individual, most people are driven to succeed: to perform well and accomplish their personal and professional goals.

Based on both traditional Jewish sources and the empirical, scientific findings of the Positive Psychology movement, How Success Thinks gives offers personal insights and strategies to cultivate a successful, satisfactory and fulfilling life.

In How Success Thinks you will learn:

  • How to define success in a manner that reflects both our core desires and values
  • How to cultivate a mindset for success in achieving goals
  • How to create a personalized strategy to achieve success
  • How to overcome the outside, mental or emotional barriers
  • How everyone can generate creativity

How Success Thinks will commence on Monday, 7 November or for those who prefer mornings, Tuesday, 8 November.

To reserve your place and obtain special early-bird pricing, please either email Shmuly on shmuly@southhead.org, call 0401-558-223, or click here.

When The Clock Strikes Midnight

Saturday night for most people is a time to "go out". It's a time to to catch a movie or a concert, to go to a bar and party, or enjoy a dinner with family and friends. May I suggest that this Saturday night, after you "go out" you "stay out" just a little longer ... till the clock strikes midnight.

With the imminent approach of the new year and the Days of Awe, our preparations for the High Holy Days have moved into high gear. When you come to Shule this Shabbat you will find the Synagogue dressed in white in preparation for the Selichot that we begin this Motzoei Shabbat (Saturday night) at midnight.

I really encourage and urge you to "stay out" for Selichot. Coming to shule at midnight is a highly spiritual experience - in a certain way the feeling is far more intimate than during Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur - and Baal Tephila Oliver Freedman will really put his all into inspiring us.

Oh, and in case you are wondering, Selichot is for both men and women! Really hope to see you there.

With best wishes for a Good Shabbos on behalf of the Rebbetzen and all of us at South Head

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM

President's Message
Ostriches & Zulus

My daughter-in-law, Matti Gild, was born in Cape Town, left when she was two years old and grew up in St Ives. Matti and my son Adam, together with their daughter Claudia and the machatunim, Lesley and Bernard Gild, went for a holiday to Cape Town in early 2013 and raved about how great it was. So my wife Yvonne and I went ourselves this past January and also had a wonderful time. One of the highlights was a Friday night that we spent with Matti’s aunt and uncle, Patsy and Les Marcow, who live in Sea Point in Cape Town. We went to the Marais Road Shul (also called the Green and Sea Point Hebrew Congregation), where Les had been president for many years; he is still active and has the title of “Trustee.” Les told us that, as it was the middle of the holidays, the shul would be very quiet. It was not. There were about 250 men and over 100 women – and the majority were at shul before the start of Mincha! Read More

The Young Headmaster
Rabbi Jeremy Rosen

At the time, the top high schools in England were Eton and Harrow, and most upwardly-mobile Jews in England felt that, if their children didn’t go to these schools, they wouldn’t be able to make it in English society. However, my father saw that Jewish children were losing their connection to Judaism in these schools, so he sought to offer an alternative. He wanted to establish a rival school that would not only offer the very best in secular education but also the very best in Jewish studies. Read More

Parasha Sheet
Parashat Ki Tavo

Q. The conventional translation of Teshuva is ‘repentance’. A more literal meaning of the word, however, is ‘return’. Repentance is a concept understood by Western society. Teshuva, ‘return' is a uniquely Jewish term. What is the difference between the meaning of repentance and return?
