STOP PRESS: Julian Leeser MP
Honoured Guest Speaker THIS Fri Night 6pm

Rabbi's Message
Your Big Heart

Dear [first_name],

This Friday night we will have the privilege of hearing Julian Leeser MP, the first Jewish Federal MP for NSW.

Julian, a staunchly loyal Australian, stands tall as a Jew, bearing his Jewishness with pride. Julian made headlines this week with his extraordinarily moving Maiden Speech. The speech, in which he reflects upon his father’s suicide, was met with universal applause from all sides of parliament. It was a real Kiddush HaShem.

You can read Julian’s Maiden Speech here. http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/the-full-transcript-of-julian-leesers-maiden-speech-to-parliament-20160914-grgj6z.html

Please make every effort to attend shule. Service (Kabbalat Shabbat) commences 6:00pm

As we approach the High Holy Day season we pray to G-d for a bountiful year. At the same time we look to ensuring that we help those families who would otherwise not be able to enjoy Yom Tov in the way most of us take for granted. Unfortunately, there are still many families who need assistance to provide even the basics for Yom Tov.

The previous generosity of our big-hearted community, encourages us to hope that we can rely on you again to assist in this most important Mitzvah of helping our fellow Jews.

Your continued support means that literally dozens of families can be assisted with large amounts of vegetables & fruit, eggs, poultry, meat, wine and groceries over the Yom Tov period.

Judaism is not a religion of harsh penance, and certainly not a religion of abstinence. Eating and drinking well with friends and family is a time-honoured way of showing respect and honour for our Holy Days. But there is one rider: ensure that your joy and abundance is shared by those who cannot afford to prepare festively for themselves.

We therefore appeal to you, to once again dig deep so that we can continue to fulfill this important mitzvah to ensure that everyone has a Sweet Year.

As always, you can honour your friends and family who host you for Yom Tov meals with a donation to the Simchat Yom Tov Fund in their honour, which we will acknowledge with a beautiful card. Please contact Karen on 9371 7300 ext 0 or email admin@southhead.org to organise your donation.

May Hashem reward all those who contribute to this important cause, measure for measure, by giving you parnassah and wealth, and ensuring that neither you nor your loved ones are ever in need.

Together with our people Israel everywhere, may you be signed and sealed for a Good, Sweet and Prosperous Year.

Rabbi Benzion and Henya Milecki

P.S. Don’t forget next week’s South African themed Kiddush and Cuisine: There’s a Zulu on my Stoep!

President's Message
New Life Wardens

On Shabbos morning, September 24th, we have the pleasure of inducting two new life wardens at South Head, Ian Charif and Malcolm Kofsky. Ian and Malcolm have each been enormous contributors to our kehilla and it is appropriate to honour them for their service.

Ian Charif came to Australia from South Africa in January 2002 with his wife, Bernice, and his two older children; his youngest child, Shira, was born a few months later. Ian’s older daughter, Nicci, married Marc Elison in 2012 and had a baby girl two years ago. Ian is an accountant by profession and has worked in commerce most of his career. He and Bernice run two childcare centres (one of which is Hug-a-Bub at South Head). Ian also serves as the accountant of the Sydney Jewish Museum. Read More

Patient Empowerment
Dr. Mordechai Shani

The Rebbe also voiced an opinion that everyone has a responsibility to take care of his or her health. Yes, doctors have a role as well, but the primary responsibility lies with the individual, for those who do not take care of themselves, who do not eat well, sleep enough or exercise enough will impair their health. That’s what the Rebbe said thirty years ago! Read More

Parasha Sheet
Parashat Ki Teitze

Q. The Mitzvah and the highlight of Rosh Hashana is to hear the Shofar, a simple ceremony of sounding a ram’s horn. Even in ancient days there existed fine musical instruments, yet the refined strains of music of all musical instruments will not do. The commandment of blowing the Shofar specifically requires the use of a simple horn, producing simple sounds. Why?
