Who Teaches the Rabbis

In this week's parasha we are told that "Man is like the Tree of the Field" and on this basis the Talmud and commentaries expound upon the many similarities that exist in both Tree and Man.

Among my favorites is the following: It is only possible to ignite a large piece of wood by first getting the fire going with small branches and chips. So too, explain our rabbis, the teachers of the generation depend for their inspiration on their students. It is the constant questioning and probing of students which enables their teachers, rabbis and professors to achieve the clarity they require for new discoveries. Or as our rabbis have so succinctly put it: "I have learnt much from my teachers, even more from colleagues, but from my students, most of all".

In this regard, it is worth quoting one of the most famous physicists of our time - John Wheeler.

A journalist once approached Wheeler with the following question:

You have educated many leading physicists, both in nuclear physics and in general relativity, at Princeton. Do you have some thoughts about educating students?

Wheeler: Shouldn't you rephrase your question? After all, I'm sure that it is really the students who educate me! We all know that the real reason universities have students is to educate the professors. But, in order to be educated by the students, one has to put good questions to them. You try out your questions on the students. If there are questions that the students get interested in, then they start to tell you new things and keep you asking more new questions. Pretty soon you have learned a great deal.

So please dear congregants, fire your questions away, and with Hashem's help, I will do my best to respond.

With best wishes for a Good Shabbos on behalf of the Rebbetzen and all of us at South Head

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM

President's Message
Meet The Niasoffs

Shabbos morning at South Head on September 17th will be a very happy occasion for Chazzan Yehoshua Niasoff: his younger son, Levi, will have his bar mitzvah; his youngest brother, Baruch, will have his aufruf; and his mother, Sofia, will celebrate her 75th birthday. We wish mazal tov and nachas to Yehoshua and the entire Niasoff family.

First, a big mazal tov to Yehoshua and his wife Nissa on Levi’s bar mitzvah. Levi has been a regular soloist from the tender age of five, a core member of our choir, and his beautiful voice and heartfelt singing has uplifted our congregation. He will be busy on Shabbos, leyning the parsha and leading the service, accompanied by an extra special appearance by the South Head choir. Levi has also released a new CD of his singing, arranged by his older brother, Aron, now living in Los Angeles. Read More

No Need For Miracles
Mrs. Lisette Sayeg

That’s when I remembered that one month before taking ill, my son had asked me to keep kosher — something he had learned about from attending Chabad kindergarten in Sao Paolo — but I had refused. Now I resolved to keep kosher, and also to keep Shabbat and go to the mikveh as a married woman is supposed to do. I did all that, but Solly was still not improving. There came a point where the doctors said there was nothing more they could do for him, and we should go back home. Read More

Parasha Sheet
Parashat Shoftim

Q. The Mitzvah of Rosh Hashana is to hear the Shofar. The Shofar is not blown on any other holiday. The sages tell us that the Shofar is blown so as to confuse the Satan. Rosh Hashana is judgement day, and on Rosh Hashana Satan acts as accuser. Having seduced man to sin, he then returns to accuse him of the very sin which he incited. But, when he hears the sounds of the Shofar he becomes so confused that he loses track of the proceedings and is unable to prosecute effectively. How could it be that the sound of the Shofar has such a devastating effect upon Satan? All year round, Satan is full of fire and fears no one, and suddenly he trembles on Rosh Hashana on account of a few Shofar blasts? Read More
