Rabbi's Message
The True Meaning of Freedom

Dear [first_name]

Together with our family, and the team at South Head, we would like to take this opportunity of wishing you a Happy and Kosher Pesach. May it truly be a Festival of Freedom - a release from the worry and anxiety that so often plagues our lives.

And may this freedom give us the opportunity to experience and enjoy all that life has to offer:

  • the extraordinary beauty of our glorious natural world
  • the spiritual harmony of our inner human universe
  • the opportunity to grow through loving and learning
  • the fulfillment that comes from nurturing and mentoring;

so that we can wake each day with the energy and vitality that only a meaningful existence can give us.

And from our individual freedom, may G-d grant a release from worry, and a heightened spiritual sense, to all our Jewish brothers and sisters and to all good men and women everywhere:

  • through real tolerance and acceptance of the "other"
  • through understanding that what unites us is greater than what divides us
  • through combining the unique contribution of all human beings towards a higher end

So that we create a synergy so deep and so powerful that it cannot help but catapult us into the Messianic Age that we all so fervently hope for.

With best wishes for a Good Shabbos and a Happy Pesach on behalf of the Rebbetzin and all of us at South Head,

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM

Yizkor Reminder
Honour Your Loved Ones

Yizkor Services will be held on the last day of Pesach (Shabbat, April 30). Yizkor is a time to reminisce on our loved ones, to reflect upon their values and appreciate the gift that was their life. In the case of parents, Yizkor has even greater significance, as the Mitzvah of honouring parents applies even after death. Yizkor is an opportunity to thank them for giving us the gift of life and to pledge Tzedakah in their names.

If you wish to honour your loved ones by way of a donation in support of the Synagogue in its work of disseminating Torah to people if all ages, please email admin@southhead.org, call the office on 9371 7300 ext 1 or make a donation online by clicking here.

Nothing To Fear
Rabbi Koppel Bacher

I had not intended to study for so long. In fact, I wanted badly to return to South Africa, but the Rebbe urged me to stay put. He wrote me a heartfelt letter in which he praised my efforts as a student – something which surprised me because I did not consider myself to be among the top learners, to say the least – and explained that I was in my most formative years and, therefore, should continue learning without interruption. He said he understood that it was hard for my parents not to see me for so long, but that, in the end, they would take great pride in my accomplishments. Read more

Parasha Sheet
A Pesach Lesson

Pesach is the first Jewish festival. Pesach celebrates the birth of our nation, when we were delivered from slavery under Pharaoh to become servants of G-d.

Q: In the Exodus from Egypt G-d performed many miracles for the Jewish people. What was it about our ancestors that made them worthy of these miracles which brought them triumph over their oppressors?

A: Throughout their hardships, the Jewish people in Egypt remained attached to Hashem. They did not forget their ancestral heritage. They did not assimilate with the Egyptians, but continued to speak the Hebrew language, name their children with Jewish names and follow the Jewish dress code. The Jewish parents and children believed and trusted in the G-d of their forefathers.

The first Pesach our ancestors celebrated in Egypt was the beginning of a new era. We should take note that every year when we celebrate Pesach it is also like a new era, to reaffirm our faith in Hashem. Every Jew, every year, experiences freedom on the festival of Pesach. As the sages say, "In every generation, and every day, a Jew must see himself as though he had that day been liberated from Egypt". The meaning of ‘liberation from Egypt’ refers to the freedom from the obstacles and limitations which the Jew encounters on his way to self-fulfillment, hindering him from reaching his destiny and from accomplishing what he must. Every Jew possesses a Neshama, a part of Hashem within him. Each day the Neshama strives to rise higher to become closer to Hashem. In doing so it is required to break free from these confining chains in order to rise higher.
