Rabbi's Message
The Man of the Century!

Dear [first_name],

Family, friends and admirers around the world are wishing Rabbi Menachem Mendel Morosow, “Reb Mendel,” a heartfelt Mazel Tov on the occasion of his 100th birthday today, Taanis Esther.

Born in 1916 in the village of Lubavitch to his esteemed father Reb “Chonye” Morozov – confidante and secretary to both the Rebbe Rashab and Rebbe Rayatz – Reb Mendel lived in Russia through the murderous Stalin years and the tumultuous years of WWII. Always sharp, even as a young boy he an played an active role in saving his father from the NKVD who had come to arrest him for his efforts on behalf of the Rebbe. Later as a teen and then as a young man, he saw his father arrested twice, the second time in 1938 – tirtzach – never to return.

Reb Mendel and his family lived in the same house as the Rebbe Rayatz in Rostov where as a young child he experienced personal encounters of great kiruv from the Rebbe. Later he lived with his family on the same floor of the Rebbe Rayatz in Leningrad.

After the war he escaped Russia with forged Polish passports on the famous “train transports,” and spent time in both France and Ireland before coming to America in the early 1950’s so he could be with our Rebbe.

When Reb Michoel Teitelbaum founded Oholei Torah, Reb Mendel joined its central Hanhalah, and spent the next six decades helping the Yeshiva, educating and being Mashpia to the bochrim in Yeshiva. Thousands of Chassidim around the world retain fond memories of Reb Mendel farbrenging in his inimitable style throughout the wee hours of the morning – his stories, his niggunim, his witty vertlach.

His father had been asked by the Rebbe Rayatz to record the Alter Rebbe’s ten Niggunim in musical notes, rescuing these tunes for posterity, and Reb Mendel never tires of teaching and singing the handful in the set that are not commonly sung. Reb Mendel sings another Niggun, a stately march, so often that people already call the Niggun by his name (Avraham Fried recorded it on his latest Chabad Niggunim Album).

Some of his witty vertlach include:

  • Chassidus teaches that the Hebrew word for world - “Olam” - means concealment, because it conceals G-d. So why is the next world called “Olam Habo”? Surely it is a world that finally reveals G-d? Because the next world conceals all the trivialities and petty conceits of this world.
  • Only those who learn Chassidus know the great worth of this physical world, where performing a simple mitzvah can connect you to the very essence of G-d. If so, Chassidim are the only ones who can enjoy Olam haZeh (this world) in its truest sense!

Youth Crew
We're Here For You!

Purim with South Head Youth in the year 5776 will definitely be a time to remember.

It started off with the amazing "Purim with the Minions" party with over 300 people coming to celebrate with us. The children (and their parents!) came in all different kinds of costumes. I think I may have even seen a couple of minions!! From the jumping castle to the plaster master, from the schnitzel and hot chips to cupcake decorating, it was one amazing night. And who could forget the Megillah reading where we all shouted booooo by hamans name.

Then together with Central Synagogue we threw the largest Purim Teen party Sydney has ever seen. Shipwrecked!!! Over 400 Jewish teenagers from schools all around Sydney joined us for a night of dancing with renowned DJ Jesse Bloch and our up and coming duo Riley and Jordan. There was amazing food, tons of laughter, with the night ending at 3:00am.

Hope you've had an amazing Purim!!!

Tzemach, Roli & Yeruchum

The Dangerous Trip
Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs

And here is the remarkable thing — had he continued to work, he would have probably gone out of business anyway. My father was an old-fashioned optometrist who was concerned with eye diseases; he couldn’t have cared less about frame styles. But the optometry business took a huge turn towards fashion. Shortly, he would have been behind the times, losing customers left and right, and unable to sell the shop for much. But, because he put it up for sale when he did, he got a very nice price for it.

I believe this was a direct result of the Rebbe’s blessing. Read more

Parasha Sheet
Parashat Tzav

Q: The period in which Purim occurred was one of the happiest eras in the history of the entire diaspora. The Jewish people had achieved a significant role in the government. Mordechai was an official of the government and Esther was the wife of King Achashverosh. Yet it was during this period when the Jewish people felt so secure that the harshest decree ever proclaimed against the Jews occurred, ‘to destroy, slay and annihilate all the Jews from the youth to the aged; infants and children all in one day’. How could such a decree be declared against the Jews in an era where they felt so secure?

A: The holiday of Purim is a clear indication that Jews and the natural course of events are two distinct realms. Divine Providence, in relation to Jews, is not subject to the laws of nature. Rather, the fate of the Jewish people is totally dependent on their observance of Hashem’s Torah and Mitzvot. Therefore, it is illogical to anticipate the evil decree in the normal order of things - it was a consequence of their special fate that this terrible decree against the Jews was made.

Just like the decree was an unnatural occurrence, so was the redemption. The Jews' salvation came about through their repentance and total commitment to Hashem. In the entire year that the decree was pending the Jews remained steadfast in their belief and faith in Hashem. In this time, even though both Mordechai and Esther had high roles in Persia, they did not proceed with a diplomatic mission to sway Achashverosh, but rather Esther asked Mordechai to ‘go and gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me, and neither eat or drink for three days, night and day’.

Esther's Story

by Diane Wolkstein and illustrated by Juan Wijngaard.

This beautifully illustrated picture book is written in the form of a diary. It pays tribute to Esther the shy orphan girl who becomes a compassionate queen. Her great courage and wisdom save the Jewish people from destruction. We read the Scroll of Esther and every year in the month of Adar we celebrate the joyous festival of Purim......
