![]() This Friday night! Dear [first_name], Please join us this Friday night for a fantastic Chanukah experience for the entire family. For the adults, we kick off at 6.00pm with Mincha, followed by Kabbalat Shabbat at 6.10pm. We will then proceed to the Herbert Hall for our Grand Communal Menorah Lighting, Communal Shabbat Candle Lighting, and a delicious Kiddush of Latkes, Donuts and Scotch to wash it down. We will then return upstairs at 7.10pm to conclude the service. Our Children's Programme - Chanukah on Fire - commences at 5.30. Your kids will be thrilled as the Chanukah Man eats, breathes, juggles and balances the flames - all while skipping on his unicycle!!! Must be seen to be believed! All children will receive Chanukah Gelt and a dreidel. Navigating Life's Dilemmas
It seems to me that a real sense of community is developing among our JLI students - one which I hope will expand and embrace an ever growing number of our South Head Community. Although we are a faith community, Judaism can only survive through learning and understanding. It is no accident that nearly all living Jews today can trace their ancestry to learned Jews just a few generations ago. Since our inception over five years ago, some three hundred students have participated in JLI, many attending more than one course. Our attendance per course is usually between 80 and 100. JLI is today the most successful Jewish Adult Education provider in the world - and we at South Head rank among the top five JLI franchises, out of well over 350 world wide. That is something to be very proud of, and we are. However I am not satisfied - and look forward to even more congregants embracing JLI, and on an even more regular basis. To give you some sense of our student's feeling towards JLI, here is an abbreviated version of Lynn Kalmin's talk on Friday night. You can find the full version here, Heidi Melamed's talk here and Roger Kaye's talk here. Lynn Kalmin One day, as we were leaving shule, Lester and I saw the notice board advertising the upcoming JLI course – it was `You Be the Judge’. Simultaneously we looked at one another and suggested that we enroll. At the time we agreed that it sounded interesting and sufficiently 'secular' and therefore we would enjoy it. From the very first lesson and the memorable debate about ‘who owned the baseball’ we were hooked. Rabbi Milecki, you are an inspiration!!! It matters not where we sit on the religious/spiritual spectrum. You inspire us every week. As each course is advertised, we find reasons to attend. Soul Quest, the journey through life, death and beyond, helped me through the loss of a very dear friend. We were on the brink of giving 'Portraits of Leadership’ a miss. It sounded dry, ancient and irrelevant, but Rabbi, you brought these amazing leaders of our people to life and we left enriched. As for `Fascinating Fact’, the myths and mysteries of Judaism. For me every lesson of every course has dispelled a myth or mystery. I mention but a few, but we have attended them all. Finally, The Kabbalah in You – the course that many of us sitting around this Shabbat table have shared. I have returned to the text and read every synopsis more than once. I do believe that I have emerged with a better understanding of self. When I started doing the JLI courses, friends asked me what they were all about. I said that the course was 'food for my soul’. It provided me with time out - time to expand myself, to learn, to think and leave my frenetic life behind. The various courses have led me to a much deeper understanding of the soul that I profess to feed. Our next course is Navigating Life's Dilemmas commencing February 11th. Hope to have you on board! To receive our Early Bird Discount, please register with Helen ASAP Call 9371 7300 ext 4 or email secretary@southhead.org On behalf of the Rebbetzin and all of us at South Head, wishing you a wonderful Chanukah and a Good Shabbos, and looking forward to seeing your whole family in Shule.
